Gold Coast: MC Mary Kom lived up to the expectations and became the first Indian woman boxer to claim a Commonwealth Games gold. The Super Mom and Olympic bronze-medallist defeated Northern Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara in the final 5-0 in her debut Games.
In Table Tennis, Manika Batra became the first Indian to win a women’s singles gold after she outclassed Yu Mengyu of Singapore 4-0 in the final.
In another first, Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian javelin thrower to claim a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, with a throw of 86.47m.
In boxing, Gaurav Solanki (52kg) and Vikas Krishan (75kg) also bagged the gold medal, making Gold Coast Games best-ever medal haul for India. Fellow boxers Amit Panghal (49kg) and Manish Kaushik (60kg) settled for silver. With this India have eight boxing medals in the event.
India had a disappointing end to hockey campaign after both the men’s and women’s team lost their respective matches to England. While the men’s team lost 1-2, women’s team were blanked 0-6.
In badminton, the country is assured of two more medals as compatriots Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu will play for the gold medal match. In men’s World Number 1 Kidambi Srikanth will play for the top honour against Lee Chong Wei.
