Mahanadi Water Row: CWC Forms Technical Panel To Examine Data Given By Odisha & Chhattisgarh

Bhubaneswar: Amid efforts to amicably resolve the dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over Mahanadi River water sharing, the Central Water Commission (CWC) has formed a technical committee to examine and analyse the data submitted by the two states.

According to Odisha’s Advocate General Pitambar Acharya, the committee is currently undertaking a technical assessment of the information and data provided by both states regarding their respective water requirements, demands and related issues.

Notably both Odisha and Chhattisgarh have submitted detailed data to the CWC outlining their requirements and claims relating to Mahanadi water. The technical analysis is expected to provide an objective assessment of the issues involved in the long-standing water-sharing dispute.

Stating that the next hearing of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal is scheduled to be held on September 17, Acharya said the proceedings are being closely watched as the two states continue to present their respective positions before the tribunal.

He expressed the hope that a solution to the dispute could emerge through constructive discussions and a forward-looking approach by the Chief Ministers of both the states.

Discussions and mutual understanding would go a long way in paving the way for resolving the long-pending Mahanadi water-sharing issue.
