New Delhi: BJP MP from Odisha Aparajita Sarangi termed the conduct of Mahua Moitra as condemnable after she along with Opposition members stormed out of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee meeting on Thursday, accusing the panel’s chairperson of asking the TMC MP personal and unethical questions.

Aparajita said that Moitra behaved in an angry, rude and arrogant manner when she was asked about the affidavit submitted to the committee by businessman Darshan Hiranandani. “The chairperson was asking questions regarding the contents of the affidavit by Hiranandani and she did not want to answer those. And then they created a ruckus..,” she told news agency ANI.

The BJP MP, who is a member of the panel, said that the proceedings of the Parliamentary Standing Committee are confidential in nature but they all came out and said things about it and the goings-on. “She should not have done that,” she said.

Aparajita further claimed that Moitra used unparliamentary words for Committee chairman and BJP MP Vinod Sonkar and all other members before storming out of the meeting, which was called to record her oral evidence in the cash-for-query case.

Sonkar, who continued the deliberations even after the walkout, also accused the Opposition members of behaving unethically and boycotting to detract from allegations against Moitra. “Instead of giving answers, she (Mahua Moitra) got angry and used unparliamentary language for the Chairperson, and Committee members. Danish Ali, Girdhari Yadav and other opposition MPs tried to accuse the committee and walked out… The committee will sit and decide the further action.”

Congress MP and panel member N Uttam Kumar Reddy had earlier told the media that they found the ethics committee chairperson’s questions to Moitra undignified and unethical. They also questioned the manner in which the meeting was conducted.

The TMC MP is accused of taking bribes from Dubai-based businessman Hiranandani to raise questions in Parliament, targeting the Adani Group. The allegations against her gained momentum after Hiranandani filed an explosive affidavit, confirming the same.
