Berhampur: Properties worth lakhs of rupees were turned to ashes after a fire broke out in a women’s hostel of Berhampur University in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Tuesday.
According to sources, the fire broke out in one of the rooms on the first floor of Shaberi Ladies Hostel of the University. In minutes, it spread to other rooms on the floor as well.
After some students noticed smoke billowing out of one of the rooms, they alerted university authorities. On being informed by the university officials, Fire services personnel rushed to the hostel and doused the flame.
But furniture and other materials worth lakhs of rupees had already been destroyed in the fire. However, nobody was injured in the incident, the sources said.
Though the exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that a short circuit might have triggered the blaze. The police have initiated a probe into the fire mishap.
Shaberi is one of the old hostels of Berhampur University, otherwise called Bhanja Vihar, located at Rangeilunda on the outskirts of the Silk City.
