Puri: A major fire broke out at a shopping complex in Puri town on Wednesday evening. Fire fighters have swung into action to douse blaze.
According to sources, the fire erupted at Laxmi Market complex housing over 40 shops and a hotel on the top floor at Mirichikote Chhak in the holy town.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, it was suspected to have been triggered by an electric short circuit. Thick smoke was seen billowing out of the building.
A team of fire service personnel was pressed into service. A shop selling dress material on the first floor of the market was gutted. However, the extent of damage will be assessed only after the blaze is brought under control, sources said.
The fire had not been brought under control when the last report came in. It is said that efforts are on to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby shops and houses in the crowded area.
Six fire tenders were engaged to contain the fire. It was learnt that two of the fire personnel have fallen sick during the exercise. They were immediately rushed to hospital.
As preventive measures, steps are being taken to vacate occupants from the hotel.
