Cuttack: Passengers of the Berhampur-Cuttack-Berhampur MEMU train escaped a major mishap near Gopalpur Balikuda, about 2 km from the Cuttack railway station on Monday afternoon, thanks to the alert driver.
Following the incident, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Khurda Road Division, Brajmohan Agarwal has constituted a 4-members inquiry committee of officers which will submit a detailed report in 48 hours.
A release by the East Coast Railway (ECoR) said that a work for construction of foot overbridge was underway at Gopalpur Balikuda from 2.20 pm to 4.20 pm for which a road crane was used.
After the completion of the work, the road crane while returning to Cuttack damaged a few sleepers and some rails on the track. At this, a red flag was put at the site immediately.
In the meantime, the MEMU train driver saw the red flag and halted the train.
The train was allowed to pass at a slow speed 40 minutes after the track was repaired, the release added.
