Malkangiri: A long-cherished dream for the residents of Odisha’s Malkangiri is finally turning into reality as direct commercial flight operations to the state capital, Bhubaneswar, are officially scheduled to begin on September 3.
The launch of this service marks a historic achievement for the remote border district, fulfilling a long-standing demand to integrate the region into major state and national aviation networks.
The upcoming air service will initially be operated using a nine-seater IndiaOne Air aircraft. Preparations by the district administration have reached their final stages, with runway checks, trial operations, and security arrangements fully completed. The groundwork for commercial operations was paved on July 22, when a trial flight landed safely at Malkangiri airport to a traditional water cannon salute. Following a detailed assessment of the runway, landing conditions, and overall infrastructure, the facilities were deemed satisfactory, clearing the path for final regulatory approvals and setting up the official launch date after earlier delays.
Developed for Rs 70 crore across 233 acres, Malkangiri Airport includes a 1,602-metre-by-30-metre runway built at a cost of Rs 29 crore. Its core infrastructure occupies 106 acres and is optimised for small aircraft, mirroring operations at Jeypore Airport in Koraput.
To ensure a smooth travel experience, local authorities confirmed that a dedicated online booking portal will go live shortly, allowing passengers to reserve tickets remotely. District officials have encouraged prospective travellers to take full advantage of the online facility once it becomes active.
The new air link is expected to serve as a vital lifeline for the aspirational district, replacing gruelling hours of road travel with rapid transit. Local traders, students, government employees, and medical patients stand to benefit directly from the improved access to Bhubaneswar’s healthcare, education, and commercial hubs. Beyond routine transit, community members and officials anticipate that the swift air connectivity will be a game-changer for emergency medical transport while unlocking new opportunities for trade, investment, and eco-tourism centered around the region’s vibrant tribal culture and natural landscapes.
