Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to Govind Sahu, the prime accused in schoolteacher Mamita Meher murder case.
The High Court granted the permission after hearing a petition filed by Sahu through his lawyer seeking an interim conditional bail. He had sought bail for treatment of his wife and son in hospital.
When the government advocate opposed the petition, Sahu’s lawyer pleaded that the petitioner does not have any relative to look after his wife and son who are extremely ill. Sahu wanted to admit them in hospital to ensure proper treatment, he added.
After considering all aspects of the case, the court issued its permission to release Sahu on conditional bail for two weeks.
Mamita, a resident of Turekela block in Balangir district, was working as a teacher in Sunshine English Medium School at Mahaling in Kalahandi. The 26-year-old teacher had gone missing on October 8 last year. Following a statewide outcry, the police arrested Sahu, who was was the member of the executive board of the school, on charge of murdering Mamita on October 19.
Later, Sahu’s interrogation led the police to dig out the charred body of Mamita from the ground of an under-construction stadium of the school.
Sindhekela police in Balangir district had filed a 2,000-page chargesheet in the case in Bangamunda JMFC court in February, 2022. The police had mentioned Sahu and his driver Radhe in the chargesheet.
