Mamita Murder Case: BJD-BJP Face-Off Over Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra’s Role

Bhubaneswar: The ruling BJD and opposition BJP were on Wednesday engaged in a verbal duel over the alleged murder of school teacher Mamita Meher of Kalahandi district.

The BJP stuck to its guns targeting Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra for allegedly running a sex racket in the Sunshine English Medium School at Mahaling in Kalahandi district, while the BJD dismissed it as petty politics at the cost of students’ future.

Speaking to the media, here on Wednesday, BJP general secretary Lekhashree Samantsinghar said Mishra was running the racket in collusion with president of the school’s managing committee Govind Sahu, the prime accused in the murder case, in  exchange of government funds.

She further said since Mamita was aware of these activities and was going to expose them, she was murdered in a pre-planned manner. Though police detained Govind following pressure from the media and BJP, he was later allowed to escape and all the evidences were destroyed, she added.

Stating that Govind was arrested due to hue and cry across the state over the incident, Lekhashree said, “Minister Mishra was personally involved in illegal activities. As it is very likely that Mishra would exercise his power as Home minister to mislead the investigation, it should be handed over to CBI for an impartial and transparent probe.”

Countering the allegations of the BJP at a press meet, the BJD spokesperson Ipsita Sahu said the saffron party was trying to spoil the reputations of educational institutions in the state by issuing false and baseless statements.

“It is a matter of shame and disgrace that the BJP is politicising the issue at the cost of hundreds of students reading in the educational institutions. Since there are other members in the management committee of the school, how can one person influence its decisions,” she questioned.

Dismissing the BJP’s allegation of involvement of minister Mishra as unfounded, Sahu  challenged the party to provide evidence to substantiate the charges in the court of law.
