Balangir: Even as police have claimed that Govind Sahu, the prime suspect in the kidnap and murder case of Sunshine English Medium School teacher Mamita Meher, has admitted to having committed the crime during interrogation, several questions remain unanswered regarding his arrest.

Soon after Sahu was arrested in Bangomunda of Balangir district, DIG (Northern Range) Deepak Kumar admitted police negligence for the escape of the accused. But he did not clarify why he was not arrested after being detained by Titlagarh police on October 13.

Five days after Mamita’s family filed a missing complaint alleging the involvement of Sahu, police nabbed him. Instead of arresting Sahu and forwarding him to the court, why did police keep him under detention for five days?

During the detention period, Sahu was kept in a police barrack at Titlagarh. He was taking food and sleeping in the barrack. Why such privileges to a suspect?

Now the question arises why the police kept him under detention without arresting him? The police argument that he was not arrested as investigation regarding his involvement in the case and collection of evidence was going on raises doubt on efficiency of the police.

Though DIG Kumar has told the media that an investigation will be conducted to find out under what circumstances Sahu managed to escape, he did not clarify the police stand on five-day detention that might have helped him escape. Can the role of police in his escape be ignored?
