Nabarangpur: A man has been arrested after his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter told police that it was her father who murdered her mother, in Umerkote block of Odisha’s Nabarangpur district.

According to sources, the couple, Manik Ghosh and Lipika Mandal, had tied the knot seven years ago.

In May this year, a heated argument had taken place between them following which a complaint was filed at Umerkote police station. Lipika had then returned to her paternal house at Karagaon.

Later in June, Lipika’s in-laws convinced her to return and they left with their daughter for Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada as Ghosh had got a job there.

The girl reportedly told police that it was her father who strangled her mother. Ghosh, however, claimed that after Lipika fainted, he put his finger near her mouth and strangled her accidentally as she bit his finger, according to media reports.

Lipika’s father has demanded capital punishment for his son-in-law. He said that Lipika was healthy and she did not faint. He alleged that this was a planned manner.

Her body was handed over to her father after the post-mortem was conducted.

An investigation has been initiated into the case.
