Baripada: Police have arrested a man for allegedly raping a married woman on plea of giving her lift in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
According to sources, 35-year-old woman from a village under Rupsa police limits in the district was waiting to catch a bus at a nearby stoppage to go to hospital on Friday evening. The accused, identified as Rabindra Behera of Bangaladahi village under Baisinga police limits, arrived at the stoppage on a bike and offered to give her a lift to the hospital.
Without doubting his intention, the woman went with Rabindra as pillion rider on the bike. On the way, Rabindra diverted from the main road to a narrow road through forest area. When she asked about the diversion, he said he had some work at a nearby village.
But finding a deserted stretch, Rabindra stopped the bike and forcibly took the woman into the forest and raped her. Though she cried for help, nobody came to her rescue as there were hardly any traffic on the road. As Rabindra fled after committing the crime, the woman managed to come to the road. Some passersby rescued her and informed her husband.
Later, the woman filed a complaint at Baisinga police station. After registering a case, the police started investigation and arrested Rabindra. He was sent to jail after the court rejected his bail application on Sunday.
