Cuttack: Police have arrested a man 6 months after he allegedly raped a woman after her family rejected his marriage proposal in Odisha’s Cuttack city.
Speaking to media persons on the case on Sunday, additional DCP of Cuttack Anil Mishra said the accused, identified as Abinash Mishra of Sapanpur in Jajpur district, was staying in Sector IX of CDA in the city. He had identified himself as a scientist of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and proposed to marry the woman belonging to Athgarh in the district last year.
But the woman’s family rejected the proposal after they came to know that Abinash was not working in ICMR and had told lies to them. Though he was dejected by the rejection, he wanted to take revenge and kept contact with the woman.
On October 3, Abinash called the woman to accompany him and took her to a hotel. After rendering her senseless with a drink spiked with intoxicating substance, he raped her. He also recorded his sexual assault in his mobile phone, said Mishra.
Later, Abinash used to blackmail the woman with the photographs by threatening to download it in social media if she did not agree to marry him. The victim filed a complaint in this regard with the police on February 2.
Following investigation, Markat Nagar police arrested Abinash on Friday and forwarded him to court on Sunday, said the additional DCP. “The police have recorded the victim’s statement and sent her for medical examination,” he added.
