Bhubaneswar: A man was arrested for allegedly subjecting a woman to sexual abuse on false promise of marrying her in Laxmisagar area of Bhubaneswar.
The accused was identified as Santunu Barik (27) from Patkura area of Kendrapada. He was staying in Upar Sahi of Laxmisagar area of the state capital. The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman with the police.
According to police sources, the complainant woman and the accused were working in a parlour in the city and the man approached her with a proposal to marry her.
However, the woman later came to know that the man was a drunkard and used to take drugs and started avoiding him. Angry over this, the man assaulted her and threatened to make photos of their intimate moments on social media.
The accused allegedly extorted Rs 1.5 lakh from the woman and promised to delete the photos. However, instead of doing this, he allegedly took the woman to Hyderabad and kept her in a house, where she was regularly tortured.
A few days later, when both returned to Bhubaneswar, the accused abandoned the woman at Master Canteen and fled.
The woman then lodged a complaint at Laxmisagar police station. Based on her complaint, the police conducted an investigation and arrested the accused, who confessed to have committed the act, sources added.
