Berhampur: Bhanjanagar police in Odisha’s Ganjam district have arrested a man of Jharpada area of Bhubaneswar for allegedly cheating and siphoning Rs 82,000 through mobile banking.
Police swung into action after Pradeep Kumar Patra of Basudebpur under Gangapur police station lodged a complaint that his loan sanctioned by a private bank in his name for construction of a house has been siphoned.
During investigation, a police team of Bhanjanagar PS was able to nab the accused, identified as Chandan Kumar Das (31), and seized the entire cash from him and handed over Rs 82,000 to the complainant.
According to police, the complainant had opened an account in the bank having a link with registered mobile number. But the mobile network company transferred the mobile number in the name of Chandan in August 2023 after Patra stopped using the particular mobile number for more than a year.
Meanwhile, the bank had sanctioned a loan of Rs 2 lakh to the complainant Patra for construction of a house for which a message regarding sanction of loan was sent by the bank to that registered mobile number which is now being used by the accused Chandan. Taking this opportunity, the accused managed to download the application of bank’s mobile banking and transferred Rs 82,000 to his account and the account of his wife from August 4 to 7, police said.
