Bhubaneswar: A 37-year-old married man was arrested in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday for allegedly deceiving multiple women through matrimonial websites.
The accused has been identified as Deeptiraj Pattnaik, a resident of Niladri Vihar.
Pattnaik, who allegedly targeted prospective brides by introducing himself as a wealth, unmarried man, was arrested by Chandrasekhar police on basis of a complaint lodged by one of the victims.
According to police sources, he allegedly boasted about 32 flats in Bhubaneswar, substantial earnings from share trading and Rs 8 lakh from his commercial property as monthly rentals.
The complainant further stated that he borrowed Rs 1.4 lakh from her on the plea to buy a cell phone, claiming that his bank cards were blocked, after several meetings between them and repaid only Rs 10,905. She doubted his intentions when he again requested her for another Rs 1 lakh, citing financial difficulties.
Following which, she inquired his background and got to know of his marital status and his ploy to trap women on matrimonial platforms.
The accused was previously booked in a land dispute case in Bhubaneswar, the TOI reported, quoting police records.
