Cuttack: A man allegedly killed his wife, a police constable, and then reportedly attempted suicide in Odisha’s Cuttack city on Wednesday. He was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.
The deceased has been identified as Bishnupriya Mallick, who was employed as a Constable in Cyber Police Station in the city. Her husband, identified as Biswajit Mallick, is a businessman.
According to sources, Biswajit and Bishnupriya were married in 2019 and were staying in Siddheswar Sahi in Cuttack. They have a five-year-old daughter.
But of late, they were often found to be quarreling over minor issues. Perhaps fed up with her disturbed married life, Bishnupriya was demanding a divorce from her husband.
On Wednesday, the couple entered into an intense exchange of words. In a fit of rage, Biswajit reportedly slit his wife’s throat with a knife. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to their house, but could not save her. She succumbed to her injuries in minutes.
Soon after committing the crime, Biswajit locked himself in a room and reportedly tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat with the same knife.
However, he was rescued from a pool of blood by police and neighbours, and rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Police sent Bishnupriya’s body for postmortem and also seized the knife used by Biswajit. They initiated a probe into the incident.
