Bhubaneswar: A youth has allegedly been beaten to death at a de-addiction centre at Dhauli, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
The deceased has been identified as Chhabi Nayak. He was admitted to the de-addiction centre three months ago, source said.
His family has, however, alleged that he was tortured at the centre and an employee had telephoned them around 3 am, informing them that he was unwell. They were informed about his death this morning. “I was informed by the centre that my husband has suffered a heart attack. When I reached the hospital, I found wounds and injury marks all over his body. We have given Rs 40,000 to the de-addiction centre with the hope that my husband will be free from addiction and return home, but instead he was beaten to death there,” said his wife, adding that they were not allowed to meet and talk to him in the last three months.
Police have recovered the body and sent it to the Capital Hospital here for postmortem. A scientific team also visited spot following registration of a case. “An investigation is underway. We will wait for postmortem report for the cause of his death,” said Bhubaneswar Zone -2 ACP Girija Chakrabarty.
