Balangir: A man sustained critical injuries as an abandoned bag he was trying to open exploded in Odisha’s Balangir district on Thursday.
According to sources, the man, identified as 35-year-old Hemsagar Sahu of Bileisathi village under Patnagarh block of the district had gone under a bridge near his village to attend to call of nature in the evening. He found a bag wrapped in a polythene sheet lying there.
Out of curiosity, Sahu picked up the bag and while he was opening it, there was an explosion. Sahu was critically injured and fell down unconscious. The villagers heard the explosion sound and rushed to the spot.
They rushed Sahu to the sub-divisional hospital at Patnagarh. Later, he was shifted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital at Balangir as his condition deteriorated.
On being informed, deputy collector of Balangir, Patnagarh tehsildar and RI went to the hospital to enquire about the condition of Sahu. Tehsildar Laxman Majhi said Sahu’s family would be paid Rs 40,000 from Red Cross fund towards the cost of his treatment.
Later, the officers along with police went to the spot where the explosion took place. The police have registered a case and started investigation.
