Mumbai: A 20-year-old man from Maharashtra’s Palghar district got so desperate for money that he faked his own kidnapping in an attempt to cheat his father.
On receiving a complaint from a resident of Vasai’s Fatherwadi area that his son had not returned home after leaving home on December 7, Valiv police station registered a missing case on December 8, reported PTI.
The police immediately started a probe.
The complainant later told police he got a call from his son who said that three persons had kidnapped him, kept him in captivity and were demanding Rs 30,000.
If the ransom money was not made available, the kidnappers will kill him, the man told his dad.
He also sent a QR code to his father for the payment.
Four police teams were formed and sent out to search for the missing man in Vasai, Virar, Nallasopara and other places.
After working on various leads, the man was finally traced to Vasai phata on Saturday.
On being questioned, the man revealed that he had wanted money but his father refused. He admitted he then cooked up the kidnap drama to extract money from his father, police said.
The 20-year-old man has been detained for further probe on the matter.
