Cuttack: When a dog bites a man it makes no news. But it certainly does when a man bites a dog in retalliation. A situation worse than this has happened in Odisha’s Cuttack city recently.
Arakhita Sahu, a resident of Shankarpur in Choudwar, is stated to have punished five street dogs that allegedly dirtied his kitchen. Sahu has a method in his madness. In order to get rid of pariah dogs that frequently defiled his kitchen adjacent to his verandah, he spiked a local sweetmeat called Gulgula with poison before feeding those to dogs.
Sahu’s recipe seemed to have worked in reducing the ever-increasing dog population in Choudwar civic body limits. The animal rights activists in Cuttack, however, have viewed the incident seriously and filed a complaint with the local police and criticised him for his “inhumanity”.
The stray dogs who had devoured Sahu’s spiked Gulgula allegedly vomitted and fell unconscious before dying. Sahu, however, appeared unremorseful and blamed the civic authorities for failing to do their duty to sterilise bitches crowding the slums of the millennium city.
