Sundargarh: A cashier of a hotel allegedly died by suicide after falling into a debt trap in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district.
The deceased has been identified as Achyutananda Sahoo (31), a native of Oradi Lankapada village in Kendrapada district. The man was working as a staffer in a hotel in Jharsuguda town. His body was recovered by Jharsuguda GRP from railway tracks on Sunday night. He is suspected to have jumped in front of a train.
According to sources, Sahoo, in a text message to his mother, revealed that he had taken a personal loan of Rs 20-25 lakh and lost it in online betting. He was scheduled to get married on December 17.
Hospitality facility manager of the hotel Pradipta Kumar Sahu told the media that he got a call from one of his family members regarding the message around 9.30 pm. “Immediately, I informed Jharsuguda Town police station and requested them to trace him,” he said.
Sahu added that he saw no signs of distress when Achyutananda was in office. “He left at around 4 pm after his duty was over and went to his room in the staff quarters,” he added.
Preliminary investigation suggest the man died by suicide after losing money in online betting, government railway police (GRP) IIC Santosh Mirdha said.
“The exact reason behind his death can be ascertained only after we receive the postmortem report,” he added.
