Cuttack: A 37 year-old man was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a private de-addiction centre at Uttamapur under Sadar police limits in Odisha’s Cuttack on Tuesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Soumyaranjan Das, a resident of Jatni. An engineering graduate, he was working in Mumbai and had returned home due to depression following which was admitted to the centre about three months ago.
According to sources, Das was allegedly murdered by some inmates on Diwali night after an altercation, which broke out between them as the former raised an alarm when they were trying to flee the rehab centre taking advantage of the festivities and lack of vigilance. Infuriated over foiled escape bid, they allegedly pinned him down and strangled him to death.
The addiction centre staff found Das lying unconscious with a towel wrapped around his neck this morning and rushed him to the hospital but doctors declared him dead.
Police have detained four inmates for questioning in connection with the incident and launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to his death. Family have questioned the non-functional CCTV camera at the centre.
