Baripada: A 28-year-old man was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life by a court for killing his grandmother at a village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district around three years ago.
Mayurbhanj additional District judge Satyanarayan Patra also imposed Rs 50,000 fine on Laxaman Tudu for the crime committed at Baunsakhantia village under the jurisdiction of Kuliana police station in the district in November, 2021.
In case of default in payment of fine, the convict will have to undergo additional jail term for six months.
As per case records, Laxman and his maternal grandfather Mandani Hembram had an old dispute and there were frequent fights between them. On November 19, 2021, a serious quarrel erupted and Laxman attacked his grandmother with a sharp weapon killing her on the spot.
He was later spotted by villagers walking on the road with the blood-stained weapon and one of his relatives filed a complaint at Kuliana police station. The police registered a case and arrested the accused.
The court pronounced the verdict based on the statement of 54 witnesses, medical report, other evidence and police investigation report.
