Bhadrak: Police on Thursday arrested a man after admitting the murder of his wife and son and burying them in a pit inside his house at Sahaspur Majisahi village under Dhusuri police station limits in Odisha’s Bhadrak district.
The arrested has been identified as Abhaya Majhi (25).
Sources said on February 24, Padmabati Majhi had given Rs 500 to her husband Abhaya and asked him to bring vegetables and grocery not more than Rs 200. However, after his return from the market, Abhaya returned Rs 200 to her. On this issue, a quarrel ensued between them. As told by the accused, his wife, in a fit of rage, hurled her 9-month-old son who died after his head hit the wall. After seeing his son dead, he strangulated his wife with a rope. Later, he dug out a pit inside his house and buried them.
The incident came to light on February 28 after the neighbours noticed foul smell emanating from Abhaya’s house. Following information, police rushed to the spot and detained Abhaya. During interrogation, he admitted to his crime.
On Thursday a team of Dhusuri police rushed to the village with the local magistrate and a scientific team. Police seized a rope which the accused used to strangulate his wife. Efforts are on to bring out the two bodies from the pit inside the house.
The bodies would be taken for post-mortem, police said.
