Balangir: A man was arrested for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 24 lakh on the pretext of providing jobs to her son and daughter in Titilagarh area of Odisha’s Balangir district.
The accused, identified as Suraj Kumar Pandey, was arrested by Titilagarh police on Sunday on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman, Geetanjali Munda, police said.
The police registered a case and produced the accused before the court. He was later sent on judicial custody after the court rejected his bail plea, they said.
Police said the accused extracted money from the woman after convincing her that he would get the job of loco pilot in Railways for her son. He also promised the woman that he would help her daughter in getting a job while demanding the money.
The family trusted the accused and transferred money to his account. However, the accused failed to arrange jobs for the two and asked them to wait citing different reasons.
Geetanjali finally came to realise that she had been cheated and lodged a written complaint with the police after losing her hard-earned money.
Based on the complaint, police arrested the accused and further investigation is underway.
