Man Held For Staging Own Kidnap To Extort Money From Father In Odisha’s Nuapada

Nuapada: A man, who allegedly faked his kidnap with the help of friends to extort money from his father, has been arrested in Odisha’s Nuapada district.

Speaking to the media on the case, Nuapada SP Gundala Reddy Raghavendra said the man, identified as Baikuntha Nayak of Boirabhadi village under Jonk police station in the district, had staged his own kidnapping to get the money from his father Jayram Nayak.

Jayram had sold a portion of his land to repay the loan taken by Baikuntha’s younger brother Pabitra Nayak recently. Pabitra had taken the loan of around Rs thee lakh from different sources on business purpose. But he could not pay back the loans due to failure in his venture.

After Baikuntha came to know that his father had been paid a good amount of money from the sale of the land, he came up with a plan with his friends to extort the money from Jayram.

As per the plan, some unidentified persons kidnapped Baikuntha on July 2. Three days after the incident, they sent a video of kidnapping and torture of Baikuntha to his father to demand ransom amount. Alarmed by the kidnap and ransom demand, Jayram filed a complaint with the police.

The SP said the police from its investigation suspected the role of Baikuntha in the kidnap. Further investigation and checking of the video sent by the kidnappers led to arrest of Baikuntha who revealed the details during questioning, he added.
