Man Held For Trying To Set Wife, In-Laws Ablaze In Odisha’s Balasore

Balasore: A man allegedly poured petrol on his wife and her family members and set them on fire at Narayanpur village under Baliapal police limits in Balasore district.

According to sources, the incident took place on Tuesday night. Accused Karunakar Kabi allegedly mounted the attack inside the home of his wife.

While others escaped, his wife Jogamaya’s father sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed

to a nearby hospital for treatment. Due to his critical condition, he has been shifted to a hospital in Cuttack where doctors are closely monitoring his recovery.

Sources said Karunakar and Jogamaya, who had married 7 years ago, were living apart due to the abusive nature of the husband. Jogamaya was staying with her 2 children at her parent’s house in Narayanpur village. This had reportedly upset Karunakar who locked their house and then poured petrol on his wife, father-in-law and sister-in-law and lit a matchstick. While his wife and sister-in-law escaped, Jogamaya’s father was set ablaze.

Villagers caught hold of Karunakar before he could escape and handed him over to the police. The family has filed a complaint at the Baliapal police station. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
