Bhubaneswar: A 35-year-old man, who had sustained critical injury during a firecracker explosion in Odisha’s Nayagarh district, passed away while undergoing treatment at (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Bapi Nayak from Minagadia village of Nayagarh.
According to sources, an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit was operating at Korada village under Nuagaon police limits. Bapi, the owner and four others were working when the blast occurred on Friday, causing severe injuries. Nuagaon Police reach
ed the spot and rescued the injured with the help of fire services team.
They were initially admitted to District Headquarters Hospital at Nayagarh, but later shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar and SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack due to the severity of their injuries. Doctors at the hospitals have said some of the patients have sustained over 70 percent burn injuries.
The other injured persons are Bapuni Nahak (40) of Korada village, Manoj Nayak (38), Hadibandhu Sethi (60) and Naba Sethi (35) of Minagadia village in Nayagarh. A minor boy 15-year-old Amit Sethi of Gereda village in Bhanjanagar, Ganjam district is also among the injured.
Nuagaon police have launched an investigation into the incident. They also destroyed large quantities of firecrackers stored illegally. Police sources say Nayagarh police has conducted raids at Etamati and Daspalla to crackdown on illegal manufacturing of firecrackers, following the incident.
