Sonepur: A man was swept away in River Mahanadi on Friday after a 40-year-old man made a vainbid to commmit suicide and created a scene there.
The man, identified as Sarathi Tandi, is reported to have left his mobile phone, ATM card and a cycle on the bridge before climbing the barricade. He plunged into the water in the presence of hundreds of onlookers. While he was being swept away with the current, he got stuck to a tree on the bank.
The onlookers immediately called up the Fire Brigate personnel. However, the man again jumped into water from the tree when he saw a group of Fire department personnel reaching the spot on boats to rescue him.
The Fire Brigade personnel had to struggle for four hours before they rescued Tandi who was intent on ending his life. He was rescued, however, and shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital immediately. Later on, he was taken to the police station for interrogation. The man, according to local sources, decided to take the extreme step after a family feud.
