Baripada: The Additional District Judge Court at Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj district has convicted a man in the case of rape and murder of his daughter-in-law and sentenced him to imprisonment for 17 years.
As per the case, Abinash Khemka, the son of Ramgopal Khemka of Rairangpur had married Shivangi, the daughter of Dilip Agarwal of Badagaon in Sundargarh district, on April 28, 2015.
Three years after the marriage, Shivangi died under mysterious circumstances on January 12, 2018. Ramgopal said she committed suicide by setting herself on fire.
But her family lodged a complaint at Rairangpur Town police station alleging that Shivangi was raped and murdered by Ramgopal. The police registered a case against Ramgopal, his wife Sunita, son Abinash and daughter Payal in this connection.
Hearing the case, Judge Deepak Kumar of the court convicted Kehmka and announced the punishment. The court sentenced Ramgopal to 10 years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for rape, 5 years with fine of Rs 3,000 for abetment to suicide and 2 years for crime against women.
The court acquitted the family members of Ramgopal for lack of evidence.
