Keonjhar: A court has convicted a man for murder of a woman and her son and sentenced him to life imprisonment in Odisha’s Keonjhar district.
As per the case, the convict, Debasish Das of Kaligaon under Nandipada police limits in the district had demanded some money from the woman and her son, who were beggars, in September, 2020. As the beggars could not pay him the amount, Debasish beat them to death and set their bodies on fire.
Following the incident, the police had arrested Debasish after registering a case against him. Later, the police filed the chargesheet in the court after investigation.
The Additional District Sessions Judge in Keonjhar heard 18 witnesses and examined the evidence in the case. The court convicted Debasish in the case and sentenced him to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the IPC. It also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him. In case of default in payment of the fine, he has to undergo imprisonment for one more year.
The court also sentenced the convict to two years of imprisonment and imposed with Rs 2,000 fine under Section 379 of the IPC and six years of imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 10,000 under Section 436 of the IPC. All the sentences will run concurrently, the court ruled.
