Puri: In a gruesome incident, a 30-year-old woman suffered critical burns after her husband allegedly set her on fire in Odisha’s Puri town.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred in Alamchandi area under the jurisdiction of Kumbharpada police station in Puri on Wednesday night.
The woman has been identified as Sarojini Mallik and her husband, the accused, Bikram Kumar Mallik (37).
The man allegedly poured petrol petrol and set his wife on fire reportedly following an altercation over family issues.
After receiving information about the incident, a team from Kumbharpada police station rushed to the spot and rescued the severely injured woman to a hospital in Puri for treatment.
Sources said the woman was later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment as her condition was highly critical.
Preliminary investigation suggests a family dispute over financial matters could have led to the incident. However, the exact cause is yet to be confirmed.
A written complaint in connection with the incident was filed by the victim’s family at Kumbharpada police station, following which Bikram was taken into custody for interrogation as part of the investigation.
