Rourkela: In a heart-wrenching incident on Saturday, a man abandoned his 50-year-old sister’s body at a government hospital in Odisha’s Rourkela and fled from the premises.
The matter was reported from Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) where one P Das of Madhusudhanpali had come for the treatment of his sister suffering from septicemia.
The woman, according to sources succumbed to the illness at around 9:30 am, few minutes after arriving at RGH. At 10 am a couple of volunteers noticed a body lying near COVID centre of the institution and alerted the authorities.
The hospital staff ascertained identity of the deceased and tried calling Das on his phone number provided during registration, but there was no response.
CCTV footage revealed that he discarded the body of his sister and left the premises soon after doctors declared her dead.
“The woman had a history of septicemia and was admitted to RGH several times in the past. Das might have resorted to the inhuman step after residents in his neighbourhood objected to bringing the body home,” a local volunteer said.
The body remained unclaimed for 20 hours following which RGH authorities reported the matter to police. Raghunathpali police have registered a case in this connection and investigating further.
