Keonjhar: One person was crushed to death by an elephant at Purunapani forest in Jhumpura block under Champua subdivision of this district Monday morning.
The victim, identified as Chamara Munda (25), had been keeping a watch over his paddy fields from a tree-top platform Sunday night while a tusker was waiting under the tree. Chamara alighted from the tree despite warning from well-wishers only to be trampled by the elephant.
This being the paddy harvest season, pachyderm would go to the fields on the lookout for fresh crop.
According to Champua forest range officer Sanjeev Raut, a compensation of Rs 40,000 would be given to Chamara’s family as per rules of the department. Chamara’s body has been sent for postmortem, he added.
