Mumbai: Security has been tightened in Mumbai after a man with a fake Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) identity card was detained near the venue where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate an event on Tuesday.
The man’s bodyguard, who was carrying a gun, was also detained by the Mumbai Police. They are now being questioned by several agencies.
PM Modi will inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest 2026 at Mumbai’s Jio World Centre on Tuesday morning. The venue and surroundings went under heavy security cover since Monday morning.
It was soon after this that the police stopped the men at the nearby Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in the Bandra Kurla Complex. On being questioned, one of them produced the PMO identity card.
Checks revealed that the card was a fake and the man, identified as Rohan Parekh was immediately detained. A gun was also recovered from the bodyguard accompanying him, India Today reported.
The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is investigating how the suspects reached the high-security area and whether their alleged attempt to enter the venue using a forged identity card and carrying a weapon was linked to the Prime Minister’s visit.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the latest edition of the Global Fintech Fest and address a gathering.
The event will bring together policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, technology firms and investors to discuss the future of finance.
