Imphal/New Delhi: Over 20 BJP MLAs from Manipur, along with state unit president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi and NDA allies, rushed to New Delhi on Sunday for a crucial Monday meeting with the BJP central leadership amid intense buzz over government formation. Reports said the summons, issued late Saturday, comes as President’s Rule — imposed on February 13, 2025, after former CM N Biren Singh’s resignation — nears its one-year mark on February 12, with the 60-member assembly in suspended animation since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023.
Sharda Devi told reporters at Imphal airport: “All NDA legislators have been called. We are hoping and believing that a
popular government will be formed.” Biren Singh, who led Manipur through over 260 deaths and thousands displaced in Meitei-Kuki-Zo clashes, expressed optimism: “Since all MLAs of NDA partners are invited, I expect a positive outcome.” Lamsang MLA S Rajen Singh hinted at leadership selection by the high command post-situation assessment, while others like H Dingo noted the evening agenda remains undisclosed.
The BJP holds 37 seats, with allies National People’s Party (NPP, 6 seats) and Naga People’s Front (NPF, 5 seats) bolstering the NDA majority. NPP’s Lorho S Pfoze and Naga MLA J Pamei joined the flight, tempering expectations: “Nothing is certain; we’re just called for a meeting.” Remaining MLAs were set to depart later Sunday.
Speculation swirls over a new CM pick amid lingering violence and reconciliation efforts, with the BJP high command eyeing stability ahead of assembly polls due by 2027. Observers link the timing to Delhi’s push for normalcy post-Budget Session, potentially reviving Biren Singh or elevating a consensus figure to bridge communities.
