Manipur On The Edge: Security Forces Destroy Three Bunkers After Militants Launch Rocket Attacks

Imphal: Security forces destroyed three bunkers in Churachandpur district of Manipur after militants launched rocket attacks in Bishnupur.

The operation was conducted in Mualsang and Laika Mualsau villages in Churachandpur district on Friday after militants deployed long-range rockets, leading to the death of one elderly citizen and leaving six other people injured. According to reports, the rocket was launched on the house of Manipur’s first Chief Minister.

Following such an attack, police teams and additional security forces conducted a combing operation in the nearby hill ranges.
A military helicopter was also deployed to carry out aerial patrolling. According to reports, high-level security meetings were conducted to take stock of the law and order situation. People in peripheral areas of Bishnupur and Imphal East districts had turned off their lights on Friday night after multiple drones were sighted, officials said as quoted by the Hindustan Times.

Fresh violence, schools shut today

According to reports, at least three persons were killed in fresh wave of violence reported fro Jiribam district following the rocket attack.
“The gunfight started in the morning after militants entered a village and killed a man. The killing was part of the ethnic clashes. The gunfight is on. We have reports that the ones who died are from both Kuki and Meitei communities,” a security force personnel told Hindustan Times. In view of such violence, all schools in Manipur are shut today.

Mobs try to loot weapons

Mobs in Imphal also attempted to loot weapons from the headquarters of the 2 Manipur Rifles and 7 Manipur Rifles, according to reports. But, the security forces foiled their attempts.

Tension in Imphal Valley

Tension prevailed in Imphal Valley after high-tech attacks by suspected militants over the past few days. Earlier, drones were made to drop bombs at two nearby places in Imphal West district.
Last year, ethnic violence had left over 200 people dead and thousands homeless in the state.
