Imphal: Violence has returned to Manipur after a period of lull.

At least one Manipur police commando was killed and five others were injured in a shootout between security forces and suspected Kuki militants in Bishnupur district on Thursday.

The fatal shootout came a day after a gunfight at Pukhao, in Imphal East district, left one Assam Rifles personnel wounded.

Today’s encounter took place in Tronglaobi, when a police team which was patrolling the area came under indiscriminate firing by suspected militants, The Indian Express reported.

One policeman was killed on the spot while the injured cops were rushed to different hospitals in Imphal.

Manipur Education minister Th Basanta Singh confirmed the shootout and said there could be casualties on the militant side also.

Taking note of repeated firing between armed miscreants and security forces, Manipur Police and Assam Rifles officials have started inspection of designated camps of militants under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement.

In another worrying incident, three Meitei villagers were reportedly abducted by armed miscreants on Thursday morning at Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur district.

The villagers, who were at a relief camp in Moirang, had gone to get supplies.
