Manipuri Cap, Kurta Pajama, Lotus Motif: ‘Bharatiya’ Touch In New Dress Code For Parliament

New Delhi: The first session at the new Parliament building here next week is likely to witness an sartorial overhaul with the implementation of new dress code for employees and bureaucrats inside and outside both the Houses.

According to reports, the new uniform, which have been crafted by National Institute of Fashion Technology, will have a touch of ‘Indianness’.

Officials of five departments will wear button-down shirts with pink lotus motifs, cream coloured jackets and white pants instead of light blue safari suits. All women officers will be given new sarees with lotus pattern on them, the Hindustan Times reported.

Similarly, marshals in Parliament will don cream-coloured kurtas pajama instead of safari suits and Manipuri caps instead of turbans, it added.

Some reports said that the male employees at the new Parliament building would be seen wearing cream coloured jackets with a lotus printed on it along with Khaki trousers.

Use of lotus, which is the national flag of India, is likely to spark off a row as it is also the election symbol of the ruling BJP.

The special Parliament session will begin on September 18 in the old building and shift to the new building the following day on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. The five-day session is expected to feature the introduction of bills related to women’s reservation and ‘one nation-one election.
