Phulbani: Security forces busted a Maoist camp and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the spot in Kandamal district on Thursday.
District collector Dr Brundha D said while the SOG and DVF personnel were engaged in a combing operation in Lengerimunda forest under Chakapada police station of the district, the Maoists fired at them.
Despite repeated requests of the security personnel to the Maoists to surrender, the members of the banned outfit continued firing and hurling hand grenades at them.
As a self-defence measure, the security forces retaliated with firing leading to the Maoists escaping from the place, deserting the camp. Later, the security personnel seized several hand grenades, detonators, weapons, explosive materials and camp materials from the spot.
A combing operation has been launched in the area, sources said.
