Angul: A Maoist couple surrendered before police in Angul district on Tuesday.
They have been identified as Chhotu Ganjhu alias Dayananda (28) of Ranchi and his beloved Jali Dehury alias Amrita (18) of Angul.
“Dayananda was working for Sundargarh-Deogarh-Sambalpur Division of the CPI (Maoist). He was carrying a cash reward of Rs 4 lakh on his head and Jali, who was also cadre member, Rs 1 lakh,” Angul SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said.
Quoting the surrendered Maoists, the SP further said the duo took the decision to join the mainstream as the Maoist outfit opposed their relationship on several occasions, adding, they were also fed up with the torture meted out to women cadres by the male members.
Both the Maoists were active along Odisha and Jharkhand border. Dayanand had joined the Maoists in 2000 and underwent a month-long training for operating weapons. He was involved in more than six encounters with police, Mohapatra added.
