Lucknow: Call it a marriage of convenience, or an unconventional escape route, the case of Kavita and Gunja has few parallels.
The two women were absolutely fed up with their alcoholic husbands, and left their homes to marry each other.
Kavita and Gunja tied the knot at a Shiva temple, popularly known to locals as Choti Kashi, in eastern UP’s Deoria on Thursday evening, reported PTI.
Kavita and Gunja, who didn’t know each other, first connected through Instagram. They struck up a good rapport and became close friends, sharing each other’s personal details.
They came to know that both lived with abusive husbands who were alcoholic. Both had unhappy marriages as they faced domestic violence.
After being in touch with each other for six years, they decided to leave their husbands and get married.
Gunja took on the role of the groom and put vermillion (sindoor) on Kavita’s forehead, exchanged garlands and performed the pheras.
“We were tormented by our husbands’ drinking and abusive behaviour. This pushed us to choose a life of peace and love. We have decided to live in Gorakhpur as a couple and work to sustain ourselves,” PTI quoted Gunja as saying.
The women said they are serious about living with one another permanently. Till the time they can afford a home for themselves, Gunja and Kavita have decided to live in a rented accommodation Gorakhpur.
