Married Woman ‘Killed’ For Dowry In Odisha’s Bargarh

Bargarh: A married woman was allegedly killed by her in-laws for dowry in Odisha’s Bargarh district.

According to sources, the woman, Surama Nanda of Lukapada village under Puintala police limits of Balangir district, was in love with Sagar Kushal of Kusanpuri village under Bhatli police limits of Bargarh district. They got married with the consent of both families a year back.

In an FIR filed after Surama’s death, her father Gangadhar Nanda alleged that she was tortured by her in-laws for dowry some days after the marriage. “Surama’s parents-in-law had called me over phone and demanded the dowry on the night of September 22. When I expressed my inability, they spoke to me in abusive language,” said Gangadhar.

Next day, when Gangadhar along with his family went to Kusanpuri, he found Surama dead. He claimed that he had seen strangulation marks on her neck. But her in-laws told us that she had committed suicide.

Later, Gangadhar filed an FIR at Bhatli police station alleging death of his daughter due to dowry torture. Acting on the FIR, the police have arrested Sagar and launched an investigation.
