Cuttack: A sailor of Indian Navy, who was martyred in Port Blair, was cremated with military honour at his village in Odisha’s Cuttack district on Sunday.
Some Indian Navy officials brought the body of sailor Johnson Behera to his village Achalkote under Tigiria police station in the district. Behera was martyred in Port Blair on August 3.
The Navy officials accompanied by hundreds of villagers took the body in a procession amid patriotic slogans to the cremation ground. The Navy officials accorded a 21-gun salute to the departed soul of the martyr and handed over the Tricolour to Behera’s family as per military tradition.
“Behera died in service and he was accorded the honour befitting the martyr. As per our practice, he was given gun salute before his mortal remains were handed over to the family. He was cremated with a guard of honour,” said a Navy official at the cremation ground.
