Maruti To Abandon 1.5-Litre BS6 Diesel Engine?

New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki currently doesn’t have a diesel engine option for any of its vehicles. Ever since BS6 norms came into effect in April 2020, Maruti had to discontinue its popular 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel engine.

There were reports that the country’s biggest carmaker was developing a new BS6-compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine. However, it is now reported that Maruti Suzuki has decided to shelve the plan. Earlier, it was believed that the Ertiga, Ciaz and the next generation Vitara Brezza would have the new diesel engine.

This decision could be because diesel prices are rising, and there is a policy push towards cleaner systems such as electrics and flex-fuel options.

Maruti has expanded its portfolio of CNG vehicles in the last year.
