Kolkata: In a bizarre case of what seems to be mass suicide, three members of a family were found dead in their home in east Kolkata’s Tangra area, while three others were hospitalised after an accident.
Among the three deceased were two women and a minor, who were found with cut mark injuries, police said.
The tragedy came to light after a road accident on Wednesday morning, in which three members of that same family, including a minor boy, were injured. All three were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses told police that the car directly rammed into the pillar, reported PTI.
When police questioned the injured family members, they revealed that the entire family of six members attempted suicide by consuming poison the night before. However, when it did not work for all of them, they allegedly decided to kill themselves by deliberately crashing their car.
Later, police went to their residence and found the bodies of three family members.
Local people were left in shock and police are investigating whether it is a case of suicide or murder.
“We have got certain clues. It is premature to conclusively say whether it was a case of murder or suicide. The body of the teenaged girl did not have any major injury mark. The exact reason behind her death and the other two deaths can be ascertained only after we receive the post-mortem examination report,” PTI quoted Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma as saying.
“In the course of preliminary investigation, we have come to know that the family was having some financial problem. We are trying to ascertain whether today’s developments are linked to it,” the police commissioner added.
