Varanasi: At least 200 two-wheelers parked at the Varanasi railway station were gutted in a major fire that broke out in its parking yard late Friday night.
According to reports, the fire might have been caused by a short circuit. The flames quickly spread through the densely packed motorcycles at the Cantonment Railway Station in Varanasi.
Majority of the bikes belonged to railway staff, reports claimed. The rescue team managed to save a few.
Eyewitnesses claimed that a short circuit occurred around 10.30 pm. This was fixed by electricity workers, but another short circuit occurred a few hours later. This incident caused sparks to ignite petrol in one of the motorcycles, triggering the fire.
Senior Railway Police Officer Kunwar Pratap Singh confirmed that approximately 200 motorcycles were turned to ashes, reported the India Today. A probe will be conducted.
