Bhubaneswar: Bibekananda School, Unit-VI, and Capital High School, Unit-III, notched up impressive wins in respective group league matches of the MCL Cup 29th Bhubaneswar Inter-School Football Tournament at Unit-VI Boys’ High School Ground here on Friday.
Bibekananda High School rode on a goal each by Suvendu Barik and Manas Dehuri to edge out IRC Village High School 2-1 in Group G. Suvendu opened the score off a penalty kick in the 30th minute, while Manas netted the match-winner with a left-footer in the 40th minute.
The lone goal for IRC Village was scored by Deedpak Sundara, whose floater in the 32nd minute beat the advancing opposition goalkeeper in the air before entering the net. Suvendu, who worked hard as a mid-fielder was adjudged the player of the match. He received the prize from Jitendra Pratap Singh, Managing Director of real estate developing company Maruti Estate India Private Limited.
Earlier in the day, Capital High School rode on a brace by Sunil Soren to prevail over DAV School, Chandrasekharpur, 5-3 in a high-scoring Group-H game. At one stage, teams were level at 3-3. Capital High School scored twice in the last seven minute to clinch a dramatic win.
Sunil, who was declared the player of the match, opened the flood gates in the 10th minute and completed his double in the 50th minute. Other three goals for Capital High School were netted by Saheb Soren (30th), Binod Naik (35th) and Chandan Naik (43rd).
For DAV Chandrasekharpur, Subhasish Mohapatra scored a brace (20th, 25th), displaying good marksmanship. Though DAV boys were first to take the lead through Asish Nanda in the fifth minute, defensive mistakes towards fag of the match led to their defeat. Bhubaneswar Athletic Association member Narendra Sethi handed over the player of the match prize to Sunil Soren.
The tournament is being organised by premier football club Unit-VI Athletic Association. Today’s matches were officiated by match commissioner Maheswar Singh along with referees Pradipta Nayak, Sekhawat Khan, Chandrakanta Barik and Bulbul Bhoi.
