Sambalpur: Tension erupted at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Odisha’s Burla following a scuffle between medical student and security guard early on Thursday.
According to sources, there was a heated exchange of words between the postgraduate student and the security guard, which escalated into a physical confrontation in which the latter suffered injuries. The exact reason behind the dispute, which reportedly took place around 4 am, is still unclear.
Later, the injured guard’s brother arrived at the scene and attacked the student, leaving him injured.
Several postgraduate students then held a demonstration, demanding disengagement of the security agency which had deployed the guard. The guard office was also allegedly ransacked. Soon, Inspector in Charge (IIC) of the Burla police station along with a team of officers reached the campus and tried to diffuse the situation.
“We are aware of the incident. I have met the injured student, whose condition is stable. The students are calling for the removal of the security agency and we take a call after discussing the matter with both parties. Additional police personnel have been deployed to prevent further escalation of the situation,” said VIMSAR Superintendent Lalmohan Nayak.
The guards of the security firm later lodged a complaint with police, alleging that the medical students abused and thrashed their colleague, Suresh Tandia, in an inebriated state at VIMSAR hostel.
